The Museum, since its beginnings in 1857, collects, catalogues, and preserves archaeological finds from Poland and abroad. It consists of nine research-related departments and employs several dozen staff members. Due to the diversity of our collection and study interests, the departments specialise in a wide array of issues. The Museum collection of artefacts is stored in three departments: Department of Prehistoric Archaeology, Department of Historical Archaeology, and Department of Non-European Archaeology. The objects date from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. Our aim is to preserve treasures of the past and knowledge about them for future generations. Museum holds five permanent exhibitions and two temporary ones changing several times a year.
Our collections are managed by the Department of Museum Collections, which is responsible for the inventory of the artefacts as well as all the procedures related to Museum loans.
We attach great importance to popularising archaeology, which is the main task of the Department of Exhibitions and Education. The Museum holds five permanent exhibitions and two temporary ones changing several times a year. We also organise educational events addressed to all age groups, especially to the youngest audiences. The Department of Publications releases archaeological books and a periodical (Fontes Archaeologici Posnanienses). Scholarly researchers, students and enthusiasts of archaeology are welcome to our Research Archives and Library where they can find the information useful for their investigations.
