A feast on the threshold of eternity 26.10.2022 - 12.02.2023

On display: 26 October 2022 - 12 February 2023
Exhibition curators: Kamila Dolata-Goszcz, Antoni Czerwiński, Tomasz Teinert (National Museum in Warsaw)

Customs that combined feasting with the cult of the dead were widespread in the ancient world. Images of men and women reclining on couches while offering wine sacrifices were depicted on Egyptian tomb stelae dating from the time when the state was under the Roman rule. These artefacts, together with the sacrificial altar and ancient vessels from the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw and the National Museum in Poznań, will be presented in the Górka Palace. The objects will be accompanied by materials describing the care the ancient Mediterranean people took to ensure that their loved ones could feast forever in the afterlife.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the concept of syncretism - the combination of ideas and elements of different religions. It is expressed in the art created by the inhabitants of the land on the Nile - and prompts researchers to reflect on the religiosity of the Egyptians throughout the centuries that followed Alexander the Great's conquest of this region.
