We invite you to an open-air photo exhibition titled "History written in the ground. Archaeological Research in the Old Market Square in Poznan".
Located precisely on the recently explored research trench, in front of the Renaissance Town Hall, the exhibition documents the course and results of the research conducted by the Archaeological Museum in Poznan in 2015 and 2020/21. The investigations brought to light numerous objects and buildings testifying to the rich history of the city.
The lowest layers uncovered by archaeologists date back to the second half of the 13th century. However, most of the finds come from the late medieval period.
In 1253 Poznań was granted city rights under Magdeburg Law, thus joining the stream of changes and influences which allowed the urban agglomeration to develop. As a result, the city flourished economically and influenced new forms of social and cultural life. The city's main square became the centre of trade, municipal power, the central transport hub, and a meeting place for inhabitants and visitors.
Both the research carried out in 2015 and that completed in April 2021 provide a broad view of many aspects of city life, focusing primarily on the late medieval period.
