XXth PROTOHISTORICAL CONFERENCE
Migrations – Trade – Travels. Mobility in the European Barbaricum
The world of Barbaricum – the lands beyond the borders of the Roman Empire – was characterised by dynamic population movements, vibrant trade networks, and long-distance military campaigns. The conference aims to explore the diverse forms of mobility that defined this part of Europe, from mass migrations to the everyday travels of merchants, craftsmen, and warriors.
By examining trade, exchange of goods, and diffusion of ideas and technologies, we seek to deepen our understanding of how mobility influenced the social, political, and cultural landscapes of Barbaricum. Particular emphasis will be placed on the motivations behind these movements, their broader consequences, and the research methods that allow us to reconstruct them today.
Challenging the long-standing stereotypes of the "barbarians," we present Barbaricum as a lively, ever-evolving world, shaped not by isolation but by constant flows of people, objects, and ideas, both within and beyond its borders.
The 20th Protohistoric Conference “Archaeology of the Barbarians” aims to provide scholars working on the archaeology of Central Europe in the last centuries BC and the first centuries AD with an opportunity to present the latest results of their research, exchange ideas, and engage in discussions centred around this year’s theme: “Migrations – Trade – Travels. Mobility in the World of European Barbaricum.”
The conference brings together researchers specialising in the archaeology of the La Tène / Pre-Roman Period, the Roman Period, and the Migration Period in Central Europe, including scholars from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany. In recent years, its scope has broadened significantly, welcoming contributions from researchers based further afield.
The conference will take place at the Archaeological Museum, 27 Wodna Street, Poznań.
