The International Commission of the Later Prehistory of Northeastern Africa (LPNEA) is an international scientific organisation gathering researchers of different disciplines working on the prehistory of NE Africa and adjacent areas. The first President of the LPNEA was prof. Fred Wendorf. One of the most important activities of the LPNEA is organising international symposiums held by the Poznań Archaeological Museum and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences. Every four years since 1980, when the first meeting was initiated by prof. Lech Krzyżaniak, the Poznań Archaeological Museum becomes a place where specialists in archaeology and other disciplines meet to exchange ideas and experiences drawn from their investigations, discuss key issues in Northeastern African prehistory and hold inspiring discussions on challenging study problems.
Some researchers have been involved in the conference for many years, establishing a kind of community of professionals with common interests who regularly come to Poznań to share the results of their work and passion. The participants of our symposium, both experienced and young scholars from around the world, bringing with them fresh views on long-established and latest research issues, create a lively atmosphere of this event, often preparing the way for new insights.
The LPNEA is open to archaeologists, researchers in related disciplines (geology, human ecology, climatology, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, physical anthropology, rock art, and others), and all people fascinated by the prehistory of Northeastern Africa. Each conference proceedings are published in a series “Studies in African Archaeology” [Here you can find a list of our publications]. The next symposium is planned for 2023.
