Temporary exhibitions

Green Sahara

July - November 2019

Curators: Dr Marek Chłodnicki,  Dr Paweł Polkowski

This temporary exhibition aims to show, for the first time in the history of Polish museology, the achievements of Polish scientists exploring the desert areas of North Africa. This research, which began in the 1960s, has recently undergone extremely dynamic development, which encourages the presentation of earlier works and a reminder of their fundamental importance for current research.

The exhibition is divided into three parts. The first one shows the changes which have taken place in the natural environment of the Sahara over the last 500 thousand years, providing a vital context for the research work presented. The second part of the exhibition demonstrates the results of investigations conducted at several dozen archaeological sites - settlements and cemeteries - providing a full picture of transformations in material culture during the Stone Age.The third part is devoted to rock art. The images can be admired not only on large-format photograms but also on boulders obtained during the archaeological rescue campaign in the area of the 4th Cataract of the Nile in Sudan.

"Green Sahara" is addressed to a wide audience, from children and young people to specialists, as some of the artefacts are on display for the first time since their discovery. Above all, it is a unique opportunity for the inhabitants of Poznań and the surrounding area as well as domestic and foreign tourists to learn about Polish research on the prehistory of the world's largest desert.
