The Archaeological Museum in Poznań, in cooperation with the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Warsaw and the Historical Museum in Svishtov, invites visitors to the exhibition "Novae. Legio I Italica – on the Border of the Empire."

The exhibition presents 11 artefacts from the collection of the Historical Museum in Svishtov, Bulgaria, including bronze portrait heads of Roman emperors and a unique sacrificial table (mensa) decorated with a frieze of figural scenes. These valuable objects originate from excavations at Novae, a Roman military site on the Danube, where the First Italic Legion (Legio I Italica) was stationed until the 5th century AD. This legion distinguished itself in defending the limes, the frontier of the Roman Empire.

The area encompassing the legionary fortress, its adjacent civilian settlement, as well as an early Christian basilica and episcopal residence, has been the subject of archaeological research for several decades. The investigations have been carried out by both Bulgarian and Polish missions, including the Interdisciplinary Archaeological Expedition of Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) to Novae, which has contributed its collection of legionary stamps for the exhibition.

The exhibition is made possible with the financial support of the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria, in partnership with the Municipal Historical Museum in Svishtov.
