ALEA IACTA EST. BONE, HORN AND ANTLER ARTEFACTS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN POZNAŃ

Alea iacta est is the title of a planned temporary exhibition curated by the Archaeological Museum in Poznań. The Museum’s collection comprises thousands of objects made of bone, antler and horn, dating from 10,000 BC to the fifteenth century AD. Among them is a reindeer-antler hoe – the oldest known bone artefact from Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) – discovered by Otto Siegert in 1899 in the so-called Provost’s Marshes in Murowana Goślina, as well as 218 other remarkable and often unique items of diverse function, including tools, ornaments, weapons, amulets and fittings. This extraordinary and rich assemblage has never been presented in a dedicated exhibition before.
