From 31 August to 4 September 2026, Poznań will become one of the most important centres of world archaeology. The 21st World Congress of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences – UISPP 2026 will be held at the Faculty of Archaeology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

It is one of the most important international scientific events devoted to prehistoric and protohistoric archaeology. This year’s Congress will be held under the theme “Archaeology in Motion: Past Lessons, Future Responsibilities” and under the honorary patronage of Her Magnificence the Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University, Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska.

Around 800 participants from all over the world will come to Poznań. The event is particularly significant, as for the first time in its history, the UISPP World Congress will be held in Poland.

The programme includes as many as 80 scientific sessions, plenary lectures, scientific excursions, and an exhibition prepared by the Archaeological Museum in Poznań. The Congress will provide a forum for presenting the latest research results, exchanging international experience, and discussing the challenges facing contemporary archaeology.

A special highlight of the Congress will be an exhibition prepared by the Archaeological Museum in Poznań:

“Routes to the Past: 30 Years of Polish Rescue Archaeology”

Its curators – Dr Danuta Żurkiewicz and Olga Adamczyk, MA – offer a look at the last three decades of Polish archaeology through the lens of rescue excavations carried out across the country.

The exhibition will feature more than 1,250 artefacts provided by nine institutions. These include selected finds from excavations conducted prior to the construction of motorways, gas pipelines, water reservoirs, underground car parks and power lines, as well as from sites threatened by intensive agriculture.

The exhibition highlights the vast body of new archaeological evidence recovered through rescue archaeology – material that will continue to be analysed and studied for many years to come.

Congress participants are also warmly invited to visit the main seat of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań at Górka Palace, located in the heart of the Old Town. Here, visitors can explore exhibitions devoted to the prehistory and Middle Ages of Greater Poland, the archaeology of Sudan, and the rock art of North Africa.

It is also well worth visiting the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve on Cathedral Island, where the remains of the stronghold of Poland’s first historical rulers from the second half of the 10th century are presented.

The official opening of the 21st UISPP Congress will take place on 31 August 2026 in the Adam Mickiewicz University Auditorium.

Welcome from the Director of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Colleagues,

It is a great honour and pleasure for me to welcome the participants of the 21st World Congress of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, who have come to Poznań to discuss the theme Archaeology in Motion: Past Lessons, Future Responsibilities. From 31 August to 4 September 2026, you will be hosted by the Faculty of Archaeology at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, on the new campus. I do hope, however, that you will find time to visit the Archaeological Museum, whose main building (Górka Palace) is situated in the heart of our Old Town. Here, we look forward to welcoming you with exhibitions dedicated to the prehistory and Middle Ages of our region – Greater Poland – as well as to the archaeology of Sudan and the rock art of North Africa. We also encourage you to visit the oldest part of Poznań –  the Cathedral Isle. There, you will find the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve, where we display the remains of the stronghold of Poland’s first historical ruler from the second half of the 10th century.

We would particularly like to invite you to an exhibition mounted especially for the Congress: Routes to the Past: 30 Years of Polish Rescue Archaeology. The curators of the exhibition – Dr Danuta Żurkiewicz and Olga Adamczyk, MA – offer a perspective on the last three decades through the lens of rescue excavations carried out by archaeologists across Poland. Nine institutions have provided over 1,250 artefacts now on display – these are selected finds from excavations carried out prior to the construction of motorways, gas pipelines, water reservoirs, underground car parks and power lines, as well as from sites threatened by intensive agriculture. They represent a vast array of new archaeological sources that we will continue to study for a long time to come. However, you can already browse through the books published to date, presenting the results of the rescue excavations, in the Museum’s library.
Please take this opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum in Poznań!
